Buying your gown online

Placeholder: photo coming soon

An online gown can open up styles you won’t find in a local boutique. It is also cut to a size chart, not to you. Here is what to know before it arrives, and how to plan its alterations calmly.

Expect alterations

Boutique gowns are usually ordered close to your measurements and fitted in store. Online gowns come in standard sizes, so most need at least a hem and some taking in. That is normal, not a sign you chose the wrong gown. Plan for alterations from the start, in your timeline and your budget.

When it arrives

  • Try it on straight away with the shoes and underwear you plan to wear, so you know where you stand while there’s still time to return or exchange it.
  • Check the fit at the widest point. A gown that is a little large can usually be taken in. One that is too small is far harder, because letting out depends on the fabric held within the seams.
  • Look closely at the finish. Check seams, zips, buttons, beading and lace. Loose threads and the odd missing bead can be repaired; it simply helps to know early.
  • Count the layers. Lining, tulle, lace and a train each change how long a hem takes, and they’re the main reason bridal alterations take longer than everyday ones.

Why it takes time

A bridal hem is rarely one cut. Each layer is shortened in turn so the skirt keeps its fall, and a lace edge may be lifted and reset so the border isn’t lost. Bodices are fitted on you, then checked again at the next fitting. Fine work can’t be rushed, so book early.

Book early

Once you know the gown is a keeper, book your first fitting. Online gowns often need more work than boutique ones, so give yourself extra time. As a guide, aim for your first fitting about 8–10 weeks before the wedding, or earlier for a big change. See the full alterations timeline.

What to bring

  • The gown, and any spare fabric or beads that came with it
  • Your wedding shoes, or a pair of the same height
  • The underwear or shapewear you’ll wear on the day
  • Your veil and any accessories worn with the gown

Every gown is different, so your price is confirmed at your fitting, once Corina has seen it on you. Bought a gown online and unsure where to begin? Read about bridal alterations or book a fitting.
